Nicolas Conver Tarot de Marseille

Heavy outlines, flat areas of red, blue, yellow and green, and repeated suit emblems create a visual grammar closer to printed playing cards than to later scenic decks. The trumps communicate through posture, gesture, costume and emblem; the numbered suit cards ask the reader to notice rhythm, symmetry and interruption.

Nicolas Conver produced cards in Marseille in the eighteenth century. Surviving examples associated with his workshop became an important reference for what is now called the Tarot de Marseille tradition. The label describes a family of related patterns rather than one timeless original. This archive entry treats the 1760 Conver pattern as a specific historical object and does not project modern meanings backward as historical fact.
