Reading Tarot Cards in Combination

From separate meanings to one coherent sentence

Source · Taroverie

A combination is not a list of keywords. Position, direction, repetition and contrast show how cards modify one another.

A tarot reading becomes more useful when cards are read as a relationship rather than as isolated definitions. Begin with the spread positions: they tell you what kind of work each card is doing. Then give every card a short verb or phrase before combining them into one sentence.

Look for four kinds of relation. Repetition strengthens a shared suit, number, gesture or symbol. Contrast reveals a tension between different needs. Sequence suggests movement from one condition toward another. Direction asks where figures, roads, hands or gazes lead attention. None of these rules decides the answer by itself; each is a prompt to test against the question.

For three cards, try: “Because of A, B is happening, which makes C possible or necessary.” Then reverse the sentence and see whether the image still supports it. Keep interpretations that remain specific, observable and connected to the positions.

Reversal can modify pace, visibility or expression, but it does not automatically negate a card. When symbols disagree, name the disagreement instead of forcing harmony. The goal is a clear account of the pattern, not certainty about the future.

Historical context: tarot combined a Fool, twenty-one trumps and fifty-six suited cards; the modern practice of divinatory combination developed later.
